Are hormones and metabolic challenges to weight loss getting in your way? To find out, check all that apply:

_____ I am gaining weight, with no change to my diet or exercise!
_____ I barely eat anything, but I can’t lose weight (or I’m GAINING weight!)
_____ I gain weight easily, but losing weight is a struggle—or impossible!
_____ I can’t lose weight, even after cutting calories, changing my diet, or following a popular diet program!
_____ I’m over 40
_____ I have a history of thyroid or adrenal problems, or I have a current thyroid/adrenal problem
_____ I feel “tired but wired” regularly, and/or don’t feel rested after I sleep
_____ I deal with a great deal of life stress
_____ NOTHING I’m doing to lose weight seems to work!
_____ I wish I had a fast, healthy metabolism that allowed me to look and feel great!

Did you check two or more of the above statements? If so, you could have a metabolic and hormonal weight loss problem. This means that your efforts to lose weight could be nearly useless, no matter how much you follow the typical “cut your calories and you’ll lose weight” advice you get from most so-called “experts!”

Kelly* was a hypothyroid patient who came to me in frustration about her inability to lose weight. She had done Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, was going to the gym a few times a week, and kept gaining and losing the same two pounds for months. I was not surprised to learn that her last doctor hadn’t done any specific testing to figure out why she was struggling. He kept telling her to eat less and keep up her exercise program—even though it clearly wasn’t working!

I ran a complete panel of blood tests and discovered that Kelly’s thyroid problem – along with a number of other issues – had slowed her metabolism to a crawl. I created a customized thyroid hormone replacement treatment plan for her, added in some missing nutrients, and brought down her inflammation levels. Six months later, Kelly was 25 pounds lighter, and finally felt like she had the key to her own weight loss success!

Patients like Kelly are not alone. I have treated hundreds of women—and men—who were mystified by how little they ate, and yet they still didn’t lose weight. Sometimes, it almost seems to defy logic. Like the personal trainers who ate 1,000 calories a day, and worked out with clients for hours each day, and couldn’t drop a pound. Or the men who spent hours in the gym each week, and were meticulous about what they ate, and yet pounds were piling on.

Did you know that unless you are getting OPTIMAL treatment for hormone imbalances – like thyroid, adrenals, and sex hormones – you’re fighting a tremendously difficult uphill battle to lose even a pound? Even if your doctor says your hormones are “normal,” hormonal saboteurs can do their dirty work to derail any diet you follow!

Did you know that a situation called “hormonal resistance” can lower your resting metabolism so much that your body functions on LESS than 1,000 calories a day? If you fall into this category, unless you eat almost nothing and work out non-stop, you will probably GAIN weight on even a strict diet!

Did you know that if you have nutritional deficiencies and absorption issues, no matter how cleanly and well you eat, you’ll still be hungry all the time, because nutrients aren’t reaching your cells. You’re literally starving, even after you eat!

Did you know that you can get easily get into a vicious cycle…you feel hungrier, store MORE fat, burn LESS fat, you have LESS energy, you move less, and your metabolism gets SLOWER, and you need FEWER calories? Meanwhile, your weight – along with your blood sugar, inflammation, and risk of other health problems –skyrockets, making it even HARDER to lose weight!

Unfortunately, while YOU may know, these are things most DOCTORS DON’T know. They just keep telling you to lose weight, but aren’t offering much more than platitudes or a photocopied food list!

I’ve found that the solution is a comprehensive, medically-based approach to weight loss known as a “metabolic weight loss program.” Medically-based metabolic weight loss does not mean invasive gastric bypass or lap-band surgery, living on lettuce, or ineffective prescription diet drugs. Nor is what some weight loss clinics offer: a bunch of blood tests they don’t follow up on, scheduled B-12 shots, a cookie-cutter one-size-fits-all diet plan, overpriced processed foods and diet “bars,” a bottle of vitamins, and periodic weigh-ins. You probably already know that’s not going to work.

Instead, it’s a multi-faceted program to root out, identify, measure, and them eliminate the hidden challenges that are blocking your ability to lose weight.

An effective metabolic weight loss program needs to evaluate four key factors:

  • Hormone Imbalances
  • Inflammation
  • Resistance Syndromes
  • Nutritional Deficiencies

FACTOR: Hormonal Imbalances

Hormones are messengers, and each one has a job to do…especially when it comes to successful weight loss. When hormones like your thyroid, adrenals and sex hormones are out of balance, weight loss can be impossible…AND, as if that’s not bad enough, the weight you gain is often in your belly! An innovative metabolic weight loss program will test for a range of hormonal issues, and will evaluate whether your levels are optimal, not just “normal.” The difference between optimal hormone balance and “your levels are normal” could be the main reason you can’t lose weight.

FACTOR: Inflammation

Inflammation is a major impediment to weight loss. Inflammation makes you less able to obtain nutrients from food and make you a superstar at storing fat. Inflammation also slows your metabolism. There are several markers for inflammation that should be tested as part of a reputable metabolic weight loss program.

FACTOR: Resistance Syndromes

Sometimes, your body stops reacting to or listening to hormones like insulin and leptin. The result? Increased hunger and fat storage, higher blood sugar, and a fast track to type 2 diabetes. There are several tests for hormonal resistance syndromes that need to be part of a metabolic weight loss program.

FACTOR: Nutritional Deficiencies

Your metabolism is like a car…it needs fuel to work. When you are missing key nutrients, your metabolism has no fuel. Your metabolic weight loss program must test for a variety of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids to find any deficiencies that need to be corrected. Anything less, and you and your weight loss effort are stuck by the side of the road, out of gas.

Once you and your metabolic weight loss doctor have rooted out and identified any challenges in these four areas, the next step is, naturally, to RESOLVE THEM! That means a treatment plan that may include prescription or over-the-counter hormones, vitamin/mineral/enzyme/amino acid supplements, and some lifestyle changes–but no, becoming a 24/7 gym rat, living on lettuce, or going vegan are NOT reasonable for most of us! There are, of course recommended changes to what and how much you eat—as well as how and WHEN you eat.
